The life of a football fan can be a difficult one. Magnificent highs are so often followed by gut-wrenching lows, and the analogy of a season for a football fan being a rollercoaster ride of emotions really does ring true. While for Manchester United fans the feeling of success is felt more than that of failure, that doesn’t mean that following the Red Devils over the course of a season isn’t a stressful experience.
That’s exactly what Daniel Harris has done and off the back of it has penned the book ‘On The Road: A journey through a season’. That season is the 2009/10 season, which saw Manchester United challenge for the Premier League, Champions League and Carling and FA Cups. The whole season is covered, right from pre-season in the summer of 2009 through to the season finale at Old Trafford against Stoke.
This is much more than just a look back at the season. It is a view from the stands. The true fan airs their view in a style that will prove to be utterly refreshing for football supporters across the country. Fans will be able to identify with the pain that Daniel feels, whether at the loss of Cristiano Ronaldo in the summer, the situation off the field in regards to the Glazers’ ownership of the club, or the premature exit from the Champions League at the hands of the Germans.
Like many seasons, the 2009/10 season starts with plenty of optimism. Manchester United are battling on four fronts and although Sir Alex Ferguson lifted yet another trophy at Wembley at the end of February, the season was ultimately one of disappointment. An unexpected FA Cup 3rd round loss to Leeds at home, was followed by the most painful moment of the season as Arjen Robben and Bayern Munich knocked United out of the Champions League. There was no end of season crescendo either, as Chelsea regained the Premier League title and the season petered out.
‘On The Road: A journey through a season’ will bring back those disappointing memories for Manchester United fans. For the rest of us it proves to be an intriguing insight into the hope and dejection felt by a fellow football fan; something we can all identify with. Passion is something that all football fans have, and this shines through in Daniel Harris’ account of the 2009/10 season for Manchester United that you can’t help but to admire.
