Having let Anthony Martial go as a free agent, United need another striker and adds that a move for Bologna's Joshua Zirkzee is "progressing". Despite previous suggestions a more experienced forward was being targeted, the towering 23-year-old Dutchman could complement Rasmus Hojlund. But United aren't the only club interested in Zirkzee, which is why speed is important in shipping out Greenwood.

If United can't secure an acceptable fee for Greenwood to leave permanently, it isn't out of the question that a second loan spell is arranged and a 12-month option to extend his contract until 2026 is taken. In that scenario, Getafe would be keen to re-sign him.

Striker isn't the only position United need to target this summer, with centre-back an important area for recruitment following the decision to release Raphael Varane. Pressure is reported to be growing on the club to land Everton's Jarrad Branthwaite amid the challenges attached to alternative targets. Potential midfield strengthening could hinge on Casemiro's uncertain future – West Ham's Edson Alvarez has been linked in that sense.
